Born to wealthy land-owners in Quebec, Robin enjoyed a prosperous early life. She was tutored in the arts, French history, and domesticity. She was considered very bright, and well-loved by the household staff. However, Canada at the time was in a state of economic downturn. Many of her father's farm workers left Quebec for New England, and the family fell on hard times. Eventually, Robin's father sold his land and opened a factory, which improved their finances somewhat.
At the age of 19, she decided to travel Europe with an older male cousin of hers. During this time, she realized her feelings for women were much stronger than her feelings for men, and she had several love affairs with other girls. Some of them ended in heartbreak, while others became lifelong friends of hers, and they kept in contact through the years. She began writing poetry during a two-year stay in Venice, and gained some local attention. She was approached to have her work published in a ladies' magazine, and from there her career took off. In the summer of 1899, after publishing her first book of poems, she moved to Paris, purchasing a townhouse with the help of her father.
Robin soon became absorbed in the artist culture that was rapidly infecting Paris. For the past 10 years, she has held a monthly salon in her garden, personally inviting both the established and up-and-coming writers and artists of her day. Recently, she has invited her much-younger brother, Amand, to live with her, in the hopes that the young film-maker will gain traction among her friends and acquaintances.
